Medical Programs
Volunteer Role:
The type of work you will be allocated as a volunteer in the medical program will depend, to an extent, on your own abilities and capabilities; which is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety.
You will be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the hospital; observing or directly assisting where possible. You can
help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice.
As an international volunteer your work may take you into all departments (depending on which hospital you're placed in), e.g. surgery, burn unit, ICU, Physiotherapy, X-ray, and even the mortuary to name just a few. However, if you are not qualified you won't be allowed into operating theatres.
You will get a good general feel of the hospital by working and/or observing in most departments.
Your
hours may vary insofar as they will be subject to shift rotations. Normally, you will work from 9-5 Monday to Friday. However, you may sometimes work evenings or nights and sometimes over weekends, etc., but you will have time off on other days.
Another aspect of your volunteer work may be to
help and assist the local doctors and nurses with their daily rounds; making medical notes and updating records. You could also be asked to
help with computer entries, and to
assist with cleaning equipment and various areas within the hospital.
Volunteers will be given basic and general on the job training by their supervisor. Further jobs would become available for those with medical experience.
Accommodations:
Accommodation will depend on
volunteer's choice of staying with a local Tanzanian host family together with other volunteers or in a backpacker's hostel. Both backpacker's hostels and our host families are simple and comfortable - with
satellite TV, kitchen and living room, a staff of laundry/cleaning ladies, and a cook. All bedding and full accommodation is provided/will be provide after paying your choice of program costs. You will not need to bring a sleeping bag or make food plans. Your only cost will be your own travelling expenses.

Teaching Projects
This is a
great opportunity for volunteers with an educational background to learn the basic fundamentals of teaching a class while simultaneously gaining valuable experience in their desired professions.
As an international volunteer you can observe the numerous obstacles affecting the education of Tanzania’s youth as well as the current lack of teachers in the country's rural villages and urban areas. Your presence will
make an immediate difference by providing sorely needed help.
As a volunteer on this project you will
work in either one or both of the local schools where you will be teaching core subjects to children of all ages and levels. There will be local members of staff in the class with you; the class size is normally up to 65 students, so it is advisable that the
class is split between you and your fellow volunteers allowing an opportunity for closer one-to-one interaction.
You will be able to teach subjects such as:
- English
- Mathematics
- Sciences – Chemistry, Biology and Physics
- Arts
- Sports and Games
- Skills/Qualifications
There are
no specific qualifications needed to join the teaching project in Tanzania. However, volunteers are expected to be fluent in the English language and it will be a bonus if you have prior experience in elementary or secondary Education.
Teaching experience will be helpful but is not required.
Volunteer Role:
Volunteers will primarily work as English instructors either in private or public schools as well as schools run by regional orphanages.
Volunteers will
teach English and other subject of interests for 2-3 hours each day (five days a week). In addition volunteers will
organize extracurricular activities, games, art classes/lessons, singing, dance, etc. volunteers may also be asked to
assist with various administrative duties as well as assist the schools' English-teachers (note: each school has at least one English-teacher)
Volunteers will
select a particular area of interest related to teaching English and explore the issue further with the help of an assigned supervisor. Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop volunteers as this is up to the volunteer to get as much or as little out of their projects.
During the volunteering period,
volunteers stay with a host family, Hostel, or in a volunteer house. However, a volunteer joining the orphanage project will stay at the orphanage's compound.
We arrange a
separate room or a shared room for volunteers; with shared bathroom facilities in host families as well as in the residential orphanage settings. Details pertaining to living accommodations will be provided in placement details prior to arrival in-country. Focus in Africa’s HQ office is located in Arusha - allowing volunteers access to the local coordinator.
