Orphanage Projects
It's hard to imagine a volunteer experience more fulfilling than working at an orphanage in Tanzania. The duties are usually taking care of basics needs for the children like preparing their meals and a place to stay. But, with limited local staff available,
there is only so much love and caring available for the children. That's why the children so eagerly await the arrival of volunteers who can give them more attention, care, and love.
The volunteers' activities at the orphanages depend both on the needs of the individual orphanage, as well as the skills and interests of the volunteers themselves.
Many volunteers begin by feeding the babies, napping the babies, teaching informal English to the children. Then,
as volunteers become more comfortable, they can share their interests and experience in a particular discipline like art, music, dance, sports, etc. With the help of the staff,
volunteers can also arrange day trips for the children.
Like other countries South of Sahara Desert, Tanzania is also deeply affected by the epidemics of both poverty and HIV.
The number of Orphans and street Kids is tremendously increasingly in big cities like Arusha and Moshi in Kilimanjaro region. Efforts have been made by various local organizations and government to protect these children by offering much-needed education and providing skill-development training.
Volunteers
help the children build self reliance and facilitate the increase of self confidence to face the future. Skills are developed through organized games, drawing classes, singing lessons, and even painting sessions. In this project,
volunteers can organize any creative extracurricular activities the children may enjoy and benefit from.
Focus in Africa, a Tanzanian-based organization provides international volunteers
many opportunities to work proactively in the orphanage's community and share their love, passion, individual skills, and efforts with the children.
Focus in Africa is working at the grass roots level with many Orphanages in Tanzania which are highly in need of your help.
Are any special skills/qualifications required?
Volunteers for this programme do not need to be officially trained in looking after the babies and children. But
volunteers must have genuine love of children; particularly poor and disadvantaged youth. Volunteers must have an interest in cultural differences and be willing to help out.

"Focus In Africa were a great to help to me as I volunteered in Arusha. They were able to organize our travel, safari, and coordinated our volunteer project at Good Hope Orphanage. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciated Focus In Africa during my time in Tanzania and I am sure they can help anyone with their plans while in the country."

HIV / AIDS Projects
Tanzania has one of the highest national HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in the world. As the largest country in East Africa, it bears a large share of the global epidemic. The
estimated HIV prevalence rate is 8.6% among adults aged 15-49. 65% of new infections occur among youth aged 15-24 years
Why the project needs volunteers:
The aim of the HIV/AIDS program is to
decrease the spread of HIV through education and raising awareness, increasing access to medical care, and providing emotional support to those affected by HIV/AIDS within the community.
Volunteers have the opportunity to work in a community HIV/AIDS organization to assist with homecare visits to HIV positive people, educate about safe sex practices, counsel community, school groups, individuals, and provide basic medical care. This
role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person. Medical training is not necessary for all aspects of the program, but a
background in HIV/AIDS and basic health care is required.
All too often parents cannot afford to take care of their children, especially if they are faced with a combination of poverty and HIV/AIDS. This is the reason why there are so many street children and orphans in Africa. By assisting in these projects you are helping to educate and elevate children who may not receive care and attention elsewhere.
Type of skills you need to help in this project:
Initiative, enthusiasm, and patience will be essential characteristics for any volunteer embarking on this project. You will need to
understand the key aims of your project as a focal point for the broader community and be aware of the long term goals in order to appreciate the hands-on work this project will require.
Any specific skills you can contribute, such as teaching experience, environmental issues, community health advice, counseling and sports coaching will be appreciated. Volunteers will need to be proactive in instigating activities they particularly want to get up and running as supervision and leadership may be fairly minimal.
Your role as a volunteer:
Your role at the centre will be to
organize a range of skill building activities, depending on your experience. There is a high
need for assistance with informal teaching and training with children and adults. The role could include activities in nurseries, children’s homes, HIV/Aids Victims, helping adults to practice their English and arranging fun activities.
Volunteers will work with a HIV/AIDS outreach clinic conducting home-based care to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The homecare will include
counseling to caretakers and distributing medication and food supplies to people suffering with HIV or AIDS. Other duties will depend on which projects the organization is working on when the volunteer is there. Volunteers will sometimes be required to visit a branch office.
Volunteers in the HIV/AIDS program will devote their time to taking care of HIV/AIDS infected children and adults while getting them engaged in various
educational activities designed to increase their awareness of the disease; in hopes of their dissemination of the information to others; with
the ultimate goal of preventing and stopping the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania.
